Disciplining a teen, especially when you’re new to parenting, can be difficult, but the Bible provides wisdom to guide you. Here are five of ten practical tips, along with scriptures to support your approach:
1. Set Clear Boundaries and Expectations
Teens need to know what’s expected of them. Define clear rules and explain the consequences of breaking them.
Example: If your teen has a curfew, make sure they understand why it’s important and the consequences for being late.
Scripture:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
2. Discipline with Love, Not Anger
Discipline should come from a place of love and guidance, not frustration. Avoid disciplining when you’re angry; instead, take time to calm down before addressing the issue.
Example: If your teen breaks a house rule, wait until you’re calm before discussing it, focusing on the lesson rather than your frustration.
Scripture:
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)
3. Be Consistent in Your Approach
Consistency is key. If rules change frequently or consequences are inconsistent, teens may feel confused and push boundaries.
Example: If your teen is grounded for breaking curfew, make sure the consequence is the same each time.
Scripture:
“Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (Matthew 5:37)
4. Communicate Openly and Listen
Open communication is essential to build trust. Listen to your teen’s perspective and be willing to have respectful discussions.
Example: If your teen argues about a rule, let them explain their point of view, and then calmly explain your reasoning.
Scripture:
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”(James 1:19)
5. Use Natural Consequences
Sometimes, the best discipline is allowing your teen to experience the natural consequences of their actions.
Example: If your teen forgets to do their homework, let them face the school’s consequences rather than stepping in to save them.
Scripture:
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”(Galatians 6:7)
